LAHORE: In a groundbreaking move, Punjab Police has unveiled the “Face Trace System (FTS),” an artificial AI-powered facial recognition system. Aimed at bolstering accountability, reliability, and efficiency in tracing and apprehending suspects and criminals.

AI-Powered System Development

Developed by Punjab Police Information Technology (IT) wing in collaboration with Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB), the Face Trace System. Harnesses the power of artificial intelligence to build a comprehensive database of over 18 million individuals, including suspects and criminals. This cutting-edge facial recognition technology equips law enforcement officers across Punjab province.

The Official Launch Of AI-Powered System

The official launch of the FTS was initiated by Inspector General Police (IGP) Dr. Usman Anwar, accompanied by DIG Ahsan Younas, who leads the IT Wing. The system was meticulously developed by collecting data from various sections and organizations within the Punjab Police.

Implementation

The implementation of the FTS has transformed the identification process, making it accessible to investigating officers across the province. Gone are the days of traditional methods involving physical visits to multiple locations, which often led to the wastage of valuable time and resources. Now, with a simple press of a button, investigating officers can instantly verify and identify suspects and criminals.

The extensive data compiled for the system includes records and pictures from the driving licenses branch (16 million records), the Crime Record Branch (1.8 million records), Punjab Khidmat Marakaz (1.3 million records), and accused individuals and criminals from Punjab prisons (300k records). This comprehensive database ensures maximum coverage and enhances the chances of accurate criminal identification.

Beyond aiding in identifying and tracing suspects detected through CCTV cameras and other sources, the FTS is designed to be compatible with the latest artificial intelligence technology.

Both IGP Dr. Usman Anwar and DIG Ahsan Younas expressed their commitment to further refining and enhancing the system through training, integration, and feedback from the police force. They emphasized that the system would continue to evolve, incorporating valuable insights.

Moreover, the FTS will soon be connected with e-police posts and crime prevention apps, expanding its scope and capabilities.

PITB Chairman Faisal Yousaf, Additional DG Qasim Afzal, Chief Technical Officer Adil Iqbal, and Project Director Asim Iqbal graced the launch ceremony with their presence, affirming their support.

The introduction of the Face Trace System marks a significant milestone for Punjab Police, propelling the force into an era of more effective crime tracking and ensuring the safety and security of citizens across the province.
